Today, digital microscope technology is expensive, but Augmentiqs, working with RIT, is developing a new technology that will further reduce the costs of digital pathology while enhancing its capabilities from within the existing lab infrastructure and legacy equipment.
Excerpt from the article: “It’s not unheard of for pathologists to ask for a consult with other pathologists. In the past, specimens were sent through the mail. How long does that take? With telepathology, it can be done immediately. Physicians can be on a call to make an immediate decision—and these are life and death decisions for patients many times,” said Donald Pophal ’82 MS (imaging science). He is the faculty guide for the students’ senior design project.
“There’s a technology here that is going to help mankind, help health care in general, and it is going to reduce costs in the process. It can potentially improve outcomes based on the ability to consult with people. It’s powerful. I see this project as quite significant.”
Augmentiqs is a microscope-centric approach to digital pathology, providing pathologists a cost-efficient and low-data method for realizing clinical and workflow enhancements. By connecting the analog microscope to the computer, Augmentiqs maintains the advantages of the microscope for workflow and primary diagnosis, while improving efficiency with the introduction of pathology software applications directly from the microscope.
By functioning as a platform for real-time software deployment within the microscope, Augmentiqs allows pathologists immediate access to imaging, analytical software, telepathology, LIMS integration and other digital pathology applications.
